Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened natural cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate chips for topping
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt or sour cream, at room temperature
  • 1 and 1/2 cups mashed bananas (about 4 medium or 3 large)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan to prevent sticking.
  2. Whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir in 3/4 cup of the chocolate chips until evenly coated.
  3. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar in a separate large bowl until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Mix in the yogurt (or sour cream), mashed bananas, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Incorporate the hot water to blend until smooth.
  7. Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and sprinkle the remaining 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake for 55-65 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
