Cinnamon Sugar Donuts

These baked Cinnamon Sugar Donuts are a cozy, quick treat with a tender, cakey crumb and a lightly crisped exterior, ideal for weekend mornings or as a sweet snack.

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and grease donut pan(s) with nonstick spray.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a large bowl.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk the egg, brown sugar, milk, and sour cream until smooth, then whisk in the melted butter and vanilla.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Spoon the batter into the donut cavities, filling each about halfway.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
  7. Cool the donuts in the pan for 2 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  8. Prepare the topping by combining the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
  9. Dip donuts in melted butter, then dunk in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat.
  10. Serve shortly after coating for the best texture.

Notes

These donuts are best enjoyed warm. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
