  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. Beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time to the mixture, mixing well after each.
  5. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla extract, and red food coloring.
  6. Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk mixture.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack.
  10. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing well.
  11. Frost the cooled cakes and decorate as desired.
