Death by Chocolate Cake

A rich and decadent chocolate cake that satisfies even the most intense chocolate cravings, perfect for special occasions or cozy gatherings.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat for about 2 minutes until well combined and smooth.
  4. Carefully stir in boiling water.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
  8. For the frosting, melt dark chocolate and let cool slightly before mixing.
  9. In a separate bowl, beat unsalted butter until creamy, adding powdered sugar and cocoa powder until combined.
  10. Add heavy cream and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  11. Once cakes are cooled, frost between the layers and coat top and sides.

Notes

To ensure the cake comes out perfectly, do not overmix the batter once the flour is added. Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
