Classic Red Velvet Cake

A timeless dessert combining soft texture with luscious cream cheese frosting, perfect for any celebration.

  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift together the cake flour and cocoa powder in a mixing bowl.
  3. Cream together the softened butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Mix in the buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Beat together the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth for the frosting.
  11. Frost the layers between the cakes and generously on the top and sides.

Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for best results. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
