Chewy Sugar Cookies

Soft, tender chewy sugar cookies with a slight crisp edge and a warm aroma of vanilla. Perfect for sharing during festive gatherings or satisfying a sweet craving.

  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar for dipping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and 1 1/4 cups of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the large egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually incorporate the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until a cohesive dough forms.
  5. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and coat each ball in the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar.
  6. Place the coated dough balls on the baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10 to 11 minutes until lightly golden around the edges.
  8. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra flavor, chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to a week. Unbaked dough balls can be frozen for up to three months.
