The BEST Chocolate Texas Sheet Cake

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup salted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup black coffee or water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup salted butter (for icing)
  • 1/2 cup milk (for icing)
  • Dash of salt (for icing)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for icing)
  • 1 box (1 lb) powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 10×15 baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Melt the butter in a saucepan, stir in cocoa powder and coffee, and bring to a boil.
  4. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  5. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry mixture until smooth.
  6. Pour batter into the pan and bake for 20 to 22 minutes.
  7. Cool the cake slightly in the pan.
  8. For the icing, sift powdered sugar and cocoa powder together.
  9. Heat butter, milk, and a dash of salt in a saucepan until simmering, then mix into the sifted ingredients.
  10. Pour icing over the cake and allow to set before serving.

Notes

Ensure not to overmix the batter once wet and dry ingredients are combined. Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 3 days; refrigerate for up to a week, or freeze for up to 3 months.
